Here's a bit of practice. I sketched the robot in my sketchbook and after I was done with it, I thought to myself, "propaganda poster!". Then I went into Illustrator using the sketch as a template and used the pen tool. As I was laying down the color I wanted to go towards the grunge look. After Illustrator I threw it into photoshop. And that's what I got. I also decided to post the clean version of the poster.

So it's been a while....

Here is another page out of my sketch book. A couple sketches done on the BART (train), at work, and at home.

The drawing on the bottom right is taking me sometime to sketch. I'm planning on finishing it. I squezzed about an hour to work on that one. Listening to some tunes and letting the pencil fly. I actually got inspired by an article on the yahoo homepage. It was about a creature that has been discovered from the depths of the ocean....the photos got my attention. http://www.flickr.com/photos/yahooeditorspicks/galleries/72157623618461809 . I thought it was cool, so I decided to sketch it.

I changed it a bit, to give it more of a different take on it.

Some doodles are meant to stay on paper, but there is the sketch of the creature with only two legs and a head and I want to model and animate it.

I've been behind on my sketching and posting. I had a lot going on this week. I recently got a job at Cinematico, Inc. in San Francisco and I couldn't be happier.

So here you go.....some sketches.
I was talking to one of my buddies, and he gave me this idea. He wanted to see somebody's eye brows get slapped off. This would be an awesome power to have, nobody would want to mess with you. One slap, and, BOOM, no eye brows. When I get some spare time, I'm planning to animated this in 2D, which would be really fun to do.

This sketch was done after I found out that I got a job as an animator at Cinematico, Inc. I wanted scream, "WOO!" and "YEAH!", all the way home, but instead I controlled myself and drew up a sketch.

"Pitcher" progress

Here is the second pass on the pitcher animation. I've moved around some keys, timing, and pushed some poses. After getting the critique I went in and evaluated references and acting it out to get more sense on how this needs to feel and look like.

Believe it or not, there there is some more critique. Animation is....well, reanimation.

Critique notes:

- The final expression needs to read dazed

- The leg needs to kick up more

-The foot needs twisting on the pose where he releases the ball

-Flatten the hips on the last pose

-A bit more timing on the reaction

-The motion of the pitch seems slow

-Tone down the anicipation of the reaction

-It needs a hop because the momentum breaks when he catches himself

-Making sure that all the silhouettes reads in all the poses

There will be more critique and more animation.

Pitching: Critique

So here is the critique I got from my instructor, Jeff Paul, and my fellow classmates.

- The ball comes back too fast, we need to see the reaction of the pitcher for about 17 to 24 frames.
- The left foot is off when he falls.
- Check the pose after he throws the ball.
- The foot is off after the release.
- I need to decide how the feet are going to be when he falls.
- The camera distorts the animation, to fix this I need to change the focal length on the camera to 50.
- The ball needs to go lower, right now its to high for the release.
- I also need to reframe so it doesnt feel cramped on screen right.
- The silhouette needs some tweaking when he gets hit, his right arm needs to be moved up a bit more.
- When the pitcher is on the ground, his legs are looking awkward.
- The arms need to trail a bit as he falls.
- Some poses need to be push a bit further.
- The back foot doesn't go up until after the ball is released.
- Check the twisting of the torso.

With this critique, I'll make my animation more believable and balanced. I need to go back to my reference and really study it.

Pitching

I started my last quarter of school last week and I'm currently taking Advanced Character Animation. Here are my sketches for the piece that I'm working on. I'm going through the planning stage of my animation. On top of this, I'm also looking at reference videos. Such as, professional baseball pitchers and how to videos. Not everything is found on the internet...I wanted the character to fall in a specific way. I had to take reference footage of myself to figure out the mechanics of how this particular character was going to fall. From there, I sketched out some addition poses and tried pushing them on paper and once again in the computer. Reference video is JUST reference. Animation is all about pushing some, if not all, the subtlities of reality.

Once I got my sketches laid out, I started to block this out in Maya. Once I got something that conveyed the message, I went back to make sure that the silhouette read. Then I would try to push some of the poses a bit further. Here is my first round of blocking. There is still a lot of reworking of the poses and timing, but this is something for critique...

More progress to come.
